Album artwork examples

Big Boi's first solo album cover is extremely simple but reflects him as an artist, representing a suitable style with the sunglasses and the gold watch and blending it with the suave black hat and jacket. The plain white background works well with the style of font and the layout of the font used, which also reflects the artist with the stylist font, the tint of diamond shine with the purple along with the album title 'Sir Lucious Left Foot'.
Blink's most iconic and most recognised album 'Take Off Your Pants And Jacket is possibly the simplest album cover i have ever seen, yet one of my all time favourites. Maybe it is simply because of the band, or maybe it is because of the beautiful simplicity and the concept used. Even trying to re-create this would be a huge risk, and it would take an artist with the stature of Blink 182 to ever pull it off.
One of the oldest album covers I have evaluated, and also strangely one of the most futuristic and stylish. Metallica's 1986 album 'Master Of Puppets' saw one of the first album covers of its time with such a simple design with the bands emblem on strings which links in well with the album title. Simple designs like this really grab my attention personally, with the bright colours standing out on the simple but effective background.
Arctic Monkeys' latest album 'Humbug' saw a new outlook on the band altogether, it was the first cover which featured any members of the band, their music had a completely different sound to it and the band had changed their image completely. I must confess, personally i think this album is their worst by far! But i really like the album cover because of how effectively they have used an aged effect on the photo, and how it looks like a photo you would take just messing around, or casually. As seen on the picture below, the back of the album saw a parchment coloured background with just the band name and track list. Something about it really attracts me to it, and re-creating something like this is what i am aiming for.

Released in 2007, Foo Fighters 'Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace' saw another simple album art with a parchment/aged paper background with an abstract image in the foreground, with no relevance to the band and no real link to the album. The half missile, half lightbulb object is what grabs my attention, the sheer originality of it is what makes the cover so successful in my eyes, along with it again being so simple! The font next to the image looks polished but is still simplistic, which compliments the image by not complicating anything.
Foals debut album 'Antidotes' is yet another simple deign and idea used effectively with relatively simple editing. The yet again parchment coloured backdrop works well as a solid colour with the sketched like portrait sitting in front of it with a colourful array in the portraits mouth attracting attention to that area. To re-create something like this as a cover would not be too challenging and i believe it would be very effective.
Kanye West's '808s & Heartbreak' album cover is my favourite of any other I have seen. After a tough year in his life after losing his mother to a shock heart attack as a reaction to surgery Kanye had treated her to, and losing his long time partner, he turned his music into a completely new sound as a sort of statement directed at his ex, with heart felt lyrics and him using his singing voice rather than rapping. The artwork also gives a statement, a deflated balloon possibly reflective how he felt. Also the colour of the balloon, red signifying love and it being in the shape of heart. The ripped heart signifies his pain, and the hands could be the happenings tearing him up.

Draft Feedback- CONCLUSION!

After gathering all the information in from my class-mates and my teachers, i have decided to take a few actions to improve my overall grade.
Firstly, i am going to remove all of the skateboarding footage, as i now agree that there is no link between the band performance. Although my original idea resolved around the skateboarding, it is now central to the band performance and the mise-en-scene.
I will replace the skateboarding with footage including the band and the original room filled up with balloons! LETS SEE IF IT WORKS!!
Thanks to everyone for my feedback!!

Mr Ford & Mr Nicolle Draft Feedback

  • Mise en scene (interior) is excellent. Great attention to detail.
  • Exterior shots are less effective- no real link to interiors. The lights do look good though.
  • Stop motion worked very well- it is used to good effect.
  • Lip syncing is good- a few lapses but that doesn't detract a great deal.
  • Props are used with real skill.
  • The cards with the lyrics on should have been used more often than once, this is a great idea.
  • Towards the end of the track the drummer needs to hit the drums with more force.
  • Nice touch at the end with the director entering the frame.

-Think about removing the skateboarding imagery.
-Do you have extra footage to fill the gaps.

Draft Feedback- Dani

BABE!

Draft Feedback- Emma

Try make the clips brighter by changing the contrast.
I think when Joe is doing the drumming might be a little bit out of time.
Music fits well with the image of the boys.
Looks fun, not boring to watch.

  • I like the blurry to focused shots
  • Make sure all of the band go for it in the lip syncing, one of them mumbles a bit
  • Like he skateboarding shots
  • Good quality
  • At one point 2 have chequered shirts, 2 don't is that on purpose or co-ordinated?
  • The drumming etc is spot on time
  • Like the props too
  • Like the free hand shots in the outdoor bits rather than using a tripod
  • As sir said, like to the outdoor and indoor scenes
  • Is a very good video though, impressed!

Draft Feedback- Leonie

Love the shot underneath skateboard.
Lip syncing and instruments look really good.
Think it would be more effective if Jake didn't look at his mates when there is the mid shot of the four of them, but it still somehow works.
Costumes and setting work well.
Love the skating scenes.
Didn't know if i missed it, but when i watched it before i think there was a piece of paper that said 'love' on it before the shot of the graffiti 'love', i really liked that so keep it in!

Filming Evidence

Band Scene

This is the scene i created yesturday for my filming with the band. It looks like a traditional bristish living room with the rocking chair, the lamp and the fire place. I think if i combine this feel with the band instruments and the clothing in which the band are dressed there could be a really successful colaboration between the two.

Band Poster

Feedback/ teacher: The font is good, as is the layout and the background but the band photos really look like 4 individual photos, with another image that is blended well of the entire band the poster will look a lot more professional and successful
