How effective is the combination of your main product with your ancillary?

How effective is your music video as a whole?

I think that overall i achieved my main aim in creating a indie genre with elements of urban art within the clothing and the dress sense of the band members. The footage is all of good quality and the editing in my opinion works well, flows and is in time with the music. The mise en scene was created by myself in order to fit the genre and be appropriate to what i wanted the scene to appear to be, a dated front room as such. The instruments, although not played correctly by some, I thought worked well as a whole. There is nothing striking in the video that highlights great error or bad continuity. I reassured every time i filmed that there was no i=un needed objects in the shot and everything within the shot was relevant.

What did you create with your ancillary product?

Digipak:

With my digipak i wanted to create a slightly different look to my overall music video in terms of outlook and genre. The paper bag coloured template was drawn by myself and scanned in, and i think that it looks very effective. i went through a lot of tweaking with the colour gradient and the contrast before i settled on just using the original colour of the paper. The text on the back of the digipak was created on 'DaFont'. I wanted the impression of a slightly messy and handwritten text to suit the style of the template. I think it works well, being black aswell none of the colours are outrageous or out of sort. The two inserts i thought was a nice touch, just two pictures one with the band in the room and the other of the same camera shot but without the band. What i was hoping for is that when there is a CD on the right hand side, there is always something filling the room. On the left would be the band, and on the right would be the cd.

Poster:

With my poster, similarly i wanted the theme to be more handwritten and alternative compared to the music video with is more plished on the whole. The text is the same as the digipak and i think that theme works well as a pair, seeing as the poster would also go within the digipak. i drew the shaded outline to the poster myself to create a rugged look, and i played around with the gradient and contrast a lot to come up with the colour i finally settled on. The image of the band has not been edited other than Harveys face (second from right). I used inspiration from some of the images obey have created of Barack Obama. An example is below:

 Would you change anything?

If i could now, i would change and polish a few elements of my music video. One of them being how long it takes the shot to focus the first time the balloons are show around the drum kit. i think that shot just goes on slightly too long. Also if i am being critical, some of the lip syncing from an outsider perspective may look shoddy for a better word, so i would polish that up and improve the band members knowledge of the words.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?


In my music video, i have taken a lot of inspiration from Foals themselves, and the 'Balloons' original video. Elements such as the room, room layout, aspects of camera work and angles and various other areas have all been influenced by other texts and media products i have either researched or i enjoy and have encountered. Here are a few illustrated examples of the inspiration on the left hand side, and my product on the right hand side.

In these images you can see that i have used a similar room that i created myself to have a dated, weary look to it similar to the one in the original Foals video. Elements that i have changed are the instruments are in a different order, for example the drum kit is not in the centre and the guitarist and the base player are stood central as opposed to either side of another instrument. On the contrary, i have left the keyboard on the right hand side and on the end, so that it did not swallow up the screen and be-little all the other instruments and more importantly, the set.

Similarly, the room set has stayed the same. The two bands are standing central in the shot and in the room with instruments in the shot. Elements i have changed in my product are that the band do not have any instruments on their person, i wanted to do this to focus the attention solely on the band. Also in the Foals video there is a choreographed dance routine at the end of the song that i have not incorporated at all in my own. Therefore this shot does not include anyone other than the band as opposed to the inspiration which includes dancers mixed in with the band, with band members scattered in the shot, in between and behind dancers and each other.

Foals live performances are known for being spectacular and audience interactive. Yannis Philippakis is also known to get the floor tom from the drum set and do a solo performance. This aspect of his perfrmance is quite alternative and i have not seen it incorporated within a music video. I decided to use the snare drum instead of the floor tom, as the snare is used mostly in 'Balloons'. Yannis also is known for walking around the concourse, the outside of the arena, onto of balconies and speakers and doing a peculiar mid air drumming action in time with the song. I used this once again as i haven't seen it in many music videos and Foals are a focal point to my product.

in the original video, Yannis and the other band members are holding and interacting with a crow, bizarrely. They have shots of things such as the crown on a lead, eating a tomato, drinking tea etc. In this shot of Yannis holding the crown, i utilised the idea of holding an object that signifies a certain line in the song, or has a certain relevance. On the line "whats the fuel called'', Joe held up the canister with 'FUEL' written boldly on the front. This signifies clearly what the object is, but has a certain audience interaction element with the question still remaining, WHATS THE FUEL CALLED?!

Another element i used in my product was the over exaggerated singing/miming used by Foals in their original video of 'Balloons'. Joe, my lead singer, is a fairly loud and exaggerated character as it is and it really is expressed in my product.

Overall, i have expressed a lot of the Foals original work in my own, and as a result of doing so i think i have recreated and added elements combining the live performances, band performance and features from their music videos and mixed them well.
